TOUR 1

MARINE ECOLOGY AND PELAGIC BIRDS

(with Dr. Gwen Penry and Ocean Safaris)

Experience a guided marine ecology and pelagic birds exploration of Plettenberg Bay and the waters around the Robberg Peninsula with Dr. Gwenith Penry – one of South Africa's pre-eminent marine mammal scientists and pelagic bird guides. This tour allows you to get up close and personal with the great mammals of the ocean and enables whale and dolphin encounters up to 50 metres. Throughout the tour Dr. Penry will share insights on dolphin and whale social behavior as well as the diverse marine life of Plettenberg Bay, which includes pelagic and coastal seabirds, seal, penguin and shark species. The Robberg Peninsula itself plays host to a colony of around 5 000 Cape Fur seals and for birding enthusiasts - further off shore over 30 different seabird species can be encountered including Shy and Yellow nosed Albatross, White Chinned Petrels, African Penguins and the impressive plunge-diving Cape Gannet. Great White sharks are also regularly sighted during the autumn and winter months, when the visibility is good.

marine 2Regular mammal sightings in the area include:

  • Humpback and Bottlenose Dolphins (all year round)
  • Bryde's Whale (all year round)
  • Cape Fur Seals (year round)
  • Common Dolphins (Summer and Autumn)
  • Southern Right whales and Humpback whales (winter and spring)

About Gwen Penry: In January 2012 Gwen began a two year post-doctoral position with the University of Pretoria's mammal research Institute, Whale Unit, based in Cape Town. Here she expanded her Bryde's whale research to include False Bay and East London, covering almost the entire range of this population. The results of her research are being used to produce the first range wide abundance estimate of this population in over 30 years and have been fed into the IUCN red data assessment of their conservation status. Gwenith is currently based in Plettenberg Bay where she continues her Bryde's whale research through the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University. She is chairperson of the Plett Hope Spot, coordinator of the Plett Stranding Network and leads pelagic birding tours on request.
