The area is critically important for the following reasons:

  • It is the most significant remaining ecological lifeline to Robberg Nature Reserve, the maintenance of which is essential for preserving biodiversity patterns and processes;
  • It is a priority area for conservation action
  • It is an essential contribution towards meeting national biodiversity targets;
  • It establishes a critical ecological link between Robberg Nature Reserve (Cape Nature) and Harkerville State Forest (SANParks);
  • It preserves the natural and scenic beauty of the coastline;

Experience a canoeing adventure with a professional guide along the Keurbooms Gorge or Goukamma River.  This full morning river canoeing trail combines the best of canoeing with local knowledge of the surrounding vegetation, birdlife, marine environment and regional history.  A picnic lunch will be served on completion of the river trail.

The Keurbooms Gorge Trail

The Keurbooms River is an iconic feature of Plettenberg Bay and is regulated by tidal activity which influences the Keurboom Lagoon. The river snakes through a vegetated gorge where it meets an open expansive system of channels and the wetland of the Bitou River.

While paddling the Keurbooms river one is exposed to the beauty of the area alongside Bird Island, a Peninsula and host to the largest breeding colony of Kelp Gulls. The birding in this area is prolific so keep an eye out for the African Black Oystercatcher and many many other endemics, migratory and pelagics. The Keurbooms Gorge has awe-inspiring appeal with many small and secluded beaches amidst the towering gorge dense with vegetation. . .

adventure tours 3The Goukamma Canoeing Trail

The Goukamma Marine Protected Area, covering an area of 2500ha, was proclaimed in July 1990. The reserve has some of the most densely vegetated dunes in South Africa and is home to the Goukamma River and the Groenvlei Lake which is fed by an underwater spring with no outlet to the sea.

The reserve is home to a wide variety of mammals including antelope, vervet monkeys, mongoose and otters. Birdlife is prolific with over 200-species represented including the iconic African Fish Eagle, the rare African Black Oystercatcher and the endangered African Penguin which frequents the shores of the reserve. Bottlenosed and Humpback dolphins are frequently seen between July and December as well as Southern Right Whales and Humpback Whales.

adventure tours 9

A full day excursion exploring the Groot River Valley and the Kolanderkloof by canoe and on foot with a picnic lunch.

Nature’s Valley is the only village along the Garden Route in South Africa which is surrounded by a National Park and can never be expanded. The allure of this area is pristine indigenous forests protected by deep river gorges. Giant Yellow wood trees act as sentinels as you approach Nature’s Valley from inland. The village is bounded on the seaward side by the ocean. The Groot River winds its way through ancient gorges opening into a lagoon before entering the sea. This is pristine Africa with awesome indigenous coastal forests, coastal habitats, shell midden sites, two exciting river routes and bountiful bird and fynbos species.

Due to the magnificence of the Groot River system, we offer a passive, guided canoeing for all passive adventurers. This adventure focus's on both canoeing and understanding the interpretive value of the surrounding vegetation, the river system, elusive mammal signs and birdlife. This trail can be combined with the Kolanderkloof Guided Walking Eco-Trail as a full day excursion in Natures Valley.

The Kolanderkloof Forest Trail traces its way through pristine indigenous coastal forests offering an abundance of forest bird species and close encounters with the majestic Yellowwood Trees. While elusive and secretive, the mammal life is abundantly rich and traces of their presence can be found along the secretive pathways which have been used over aeons of time on both trails.
